Sponsorship Program
Rainbow Refugee Assistance Partnership (RRAP)
Rainbow Refugee’s Sponsorship Program is founded on the conviction that every LGBTQIA+ person deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, freedom, and safety. By harnessing the collective commitment of community members, trained volunteers, and staff, we create pathways for those facing persecution, violence, and marginalization to rebuild their lives in Canada. Our approach is not merely about relocation—it is about offering a fresh start, empowerment, and hope for a better future.
A cornerstone of our sponsorship program, the Rainbow Refugee Assistance Partnership (RRAP) is a national cost-sharing agreement established between community organizations like Rainbow Refugee and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). RRAP is designed to provide essential financial support to sponsored refugees during their critical first year in Canada, ensuring that they have the means to establish themselves in a new, safer environment.
Key Aspects of RRAP:
Through RRAP, selected LGBTQIA+ refugees receive funds to cover vital living expenses, which might include housing, medical needs, transportation, and daily necessities during the first 12 months following arrival. The financial aid not only offers immediate relief but also serves as a stabilizing force that allows the refugee to focus on integrating into their new community without the overwhelming burden of financial instability.
RRAP exemplifies a model of cost-sharing that leverages the generosity of communities and the structural support of governmental partnerships. While the program does depend on limited funds and strict eligibility criteria, it is a testament to what can be achieved when public policy and grassroots activism join forces. This symbiotic relationship between Rainbow Refugee, community groups, and IRCC underlines the collaborative spirit of our collective endeavor.
The success stories emerging from the RRAP initiative are a profound source of inspiration. Each funded case represents not just a financial transaction but a transformative journey that reaffirms the value of empathy, determination, and communal support. Every year, RRAP helps create safe havens that allow LGBTQIA+ refugees to thrive in their new surroundings, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse society that celebrates differences and honors human rights.
Managing RRAP requires rigorous monitoring and reporting to ensure that funds are used effectively and that all conditions of the partnership are met. Rainbow Refugee is deeply committed to transparency and continuous learning. Our staff work closely with Circles of Hope to evaluate outcomes and refine processes, ensuring that each financial support package not only meets but exceeds the needs of the sponsored refugee. This accountability reinforces community trust and underpins the program’s long-term sustainability.
Our triage process is designed to manage the high volume of inquiries with sensitivity and precision. By assessing each case through a compassionate yet pragmatic lens, we ensure that every applicant is treated with respect while aligning cases with our limited capacity. We prioritize individuals who are outside of Canada, meet the legal refugee criteria, and face exceptional risks in their home countries.
Circles of Hope are the lifeblood of our sponsorship program. These dedicated groups of volunteers commit themselves to providing hands-on, personalized support throughout a refugee’s settlement journey. We provide them with extensive resources, from detailed handbooks and practical tools to regular coaching sessions. The relationship built within a Circle of Hope is one of mutual respect and shared responsibility—transforming the sponsorship process into a collective, uplifting experience.
Prior to being matched with a refugee, every Circle member undergoes a thorough orientation and training process. These sessions are designed not only to cover essential logistical and legal information but also to cultivate a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and empathetic approach. Ongoing training sessions address topics ranging from conflict resolution and burnout prevention to cultural humility and ethical sponsorship practices. This capacity building is crucial to the success of each sponsorship case and the well-being of everyone involved.
Recognizing that private sponsorship relies heavily on community-sourced funds, Rainbow Refugee offers specialized fundraising and financial training tailored to the needs of Circles of Hope. Workshops and one-on-one coaching help teams develop fundraising strategies, manage budgets effectively, and ensure that financial support is sustainable throughout the refugee’s first year. Our training modules include detailed budgeting templates, best practice fundraising methods, and strategies for approaching community donors and securing grants. These skills not only enhance the Circle’s ability to support refugees but also empower communities to take charge of their sponsorship initiatives.
A sensitive and thoughtful matching process ensures that every refugee is paired with a Circle of Hope that can meet their needs and with whom they share a mutual vision for their future. We facilitate thorough interviews and readiness assessments to create a foundation of trust and compatibility. Rainbow Refugee remains engaged throughout the process, offering guidance on transition challenges and supporting both refugees and volunteer sponsors during the crucial early stages of resettlement.
Beyond logistics and paperwork, Rainbow Refugee fosters a vibrant network of communities dedicated to making sponsorship a shared, inspiring endeavor. We actively facilitate connections between experienced and newly formed Circles of Hope, creating a supportive environment where lessons, experiences, and inspirations are freely exchanged. Our periodic community gatherings, mentorship programs, and peer-to-peer initiatives are designed to build solidarity, cultivate innovative ideas, and celebrate the transformative journeys of every sponsored refugee.
Public engagement and community awareness are central to our mission. When Circles of Hope organize fundraising events, community celebrations, or storytelling forums, Rainbow Refugee lends its full support through event promotion and media outreach. We provide assistance in crafting narratives that honor the courage and resilience of sponsored refugees while protecting their privacy and dignity. These events serve as beacons of hope, demonstrating that every positive story contributes to a broader movement for justice and equality.
