Why should I fundraise for Rainbow Refugee?
Rainbow Refugee supports some of the most marginalized people globally — LGBTQIA+ individuals who are trans, racialized, and often living with intersecting barriers such as poverty or HIV status. Many have faced violence and rejection in their home countries and have had little opportunity to thrive. Your fundraising helps us provide pathways to safety and belonging.
Should I fundraise for a Circle of Hope or give to the general fund?
While both are important, we encourage most fundraisers to support our general fund. General donations provide the most flexibility to respond to urgent needs and support emerging priorities across all our programs.
Can my donation be matched?
We occasionally have matching campaigns thanks to generous sponsors or donors. Follow us on Instagram or check our website for updates on active matching opportunities.

Maybe. It depends on our team’s capacity, the location, and whether the event is in person or online. Please fill out the 'Book a Speaker' form under the Take Action section of our website.
Can a refugee speak at my event?
Usually not. We do not typically recommend asking refugee claimants to speak due to safety and vulnerability. If someone chooses to participate, they must be paid for their lived experience. Compensating refugee speakers not only honours their time but also helps challenge systemic inequities by valuing the voices of those with lived experience.
What values should my event reflect?
All fundraising must be in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ people fleeing persecution. We do not endorse events that conflict with our anti-oppression and anti-racist commitments, including those aligned with past or ongoing systems of colonial violence.

Fundraisers must align with Rainbow Refugee’s anti-oppressive values and our mission of solidarity with forcibly displaced LGBTQIA+ people.
Can Rainbow Refugee end a Circle of Hope relationship?
Yes. If a Circle’s conduct does not align with our values or if there are serious concerns about capacity or ethics, Rainbow Refugee reserves the right to end the relationship at any time.
Can I join a Circle if I don’t have a group?
Sometimes. Rainbow Refugee may be able to connect you with an existing Circle or group forming in your area.
Do Circles get training?
Yes. Rainbow Refugee offers training on ethical sponsorship, LGBTQIA+ awareness, and trauma-informed support.
What’s the difference between RRAP and other sponsorship programs?
RRAP is a government-supported program specifically for LGBTQIA+ refugees. It’s a unique partnership between Rainbow Refugee and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Can I sponsor someone I know personally?
Yes, if they qualify under RRAP guidelines and are not already resettled or supported by another program. All cases must go through an ethical screening process.
What if our Circle cannot meet the financial goal?
We encourage additional fundraising or reaching out to community supporters. Rainbow Refugee may help with advice or promotion but cannot provide direct funding.
Do we get to choose who we sponsor?
Sponsors may express preferences, but Rainbow Refugee prioritizes equity and vulnerability in matching sponsors with refugee applicants.
How long does the process take?
Sponsorship can take 12–24 months or longer from application to arrival, depending on government processing and country conditions.
Do sponsored refugees get any government support?
Through RRAP, the government provides some financial support, but Circles are responsible for the rest.
What happens after the first year?
The sponsored person continues to live independently. Circles may choose to stay in touch, but their formal responsibility ends after 12 months.
Can a Circle support more than one person?
Yes, but only with careful planning, adequate resources, and approval through the program.
Can we apply if we live outside British Columbia?
No. Circles of Hope must be based in BC and registered through Rainbow Refugee.
Do we need to speak the refugee’s language?
It helps, but it’s not required. Rainbow Refugee can suggest interpretation supports if needed.
Can we partner with a community group or faith-based organization?
Yes. Many Circles are supported by community groups, workplaces, or congregations.
Is the process confidential?
Yes. Respect for the privacy and safety of the sponsored person is critical.
What support does Rainbow Refugee provide to Circles?
We provide training, application guidance, resources, and case coordination support throughout the sponsorship journey.
What if someone in our Circle has to step back?
Your Circle should have enough members to stay strong if one person steps down. We recommend planning for transitions.
Can Circles connect with each other?
Yes. Rainbow Refugee offers opportunities for Circles to share learning and build community.
Are Circle members background-checked?
Not officially, but we ask Circles to self-screen and maintain a safe, accountable environment.
Can Circles fundraise together?
Yes. Many Circles organize community fundraisers to meet financial goals. These events are a great way to stay busy, connect with new people, and raise awareness. All fundraising efforts must align with our mission and anti-oppressive values.
What if I move or change provinces?
If a key Circle member relocates or steps back, the Circle must assess whether it still meets the sponsorship requirements. In some cases, relocation may impact your Circle’s ability to continue. Sponsorship may no longer be feasible.
How do we get started?
Visit our website’s Circle of Hope section and complete the interest form to begin your journey. Rainbow Refugee will then assess your Circle’s readiness to move forward with sponsorship.
What if things go wrong after we apply?
Rainbow Refugee relies on the Canadian government to process all sponsorship applications. Once submitted, timelines and decisions are outside our control. However, we remain in contact and advocate for LGBTQIA+ refugee cases wherever possible.
Is collaboration important?
Yes. All Circle members are expected to work collaboratively, share responsibility, and communicate openly throughout the sponsorship process.
Who can volunteer or intern with Rainbow Refugee?
Anyone based in British Columbia who shares our values of inclusion, anti-oppression, and solidarity with LGBTQIA+ refugees may apply. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds.
Do I need to identify as LGBTQIA+ to volunteer?
No. Allies are welcome, but you must understand and respect the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ refugee communities.
What kind of volunteer roles are available?
Roles include event support, outreach, peer support, admin tasks, translation, and more. Volunteer roles change depending on program needs.
Are volunteer roles in-person or remote?
Most roles are in-person in Vancouver, though some projects (like resource writing or translation) may be done remotely.
Is there an age requirement to volunteer?
Yes. You must be 19 or older to volunteer.
What is the time commitment?
It depends on the role. Some roles are ongoing (e.g., mentorship), while others are short-term (e.g., event support). Most roles ask for 3–6 hours per month.
Do you accept interns or practicum students?
Yes. Internships are part of our volunteer program and receive supervision and support. Placements are limited and must be approved in advance.
How do I apply to volunteer or intern?
Fill out the application form on our website. We review submissions and invite selected candidates for an interview or orientation.
Is training provided?
Yes. All volunteers receive orientation and training relevant to their roles, including privacy, trauma-informed care, and LGBTQIA+ inclusion.
Can I use my volunteer hours for school credit?
In many cases, yes. Check with your program advisor and let us know in advance so we can support you.
Do I need previous experience working with refugees?
No, but relevant experience or language skills are helpful. We care most about your values, respect, and willingness to learn.
Can I volunteer if I have limited English?
Possibly. Some roles, such as interpretation or cultural support, may suit multilingual applicants.
Will I get a reference letter?
Yes. If you complete your volunteer commitment and communicate openly, we’re happy to provide reference letters.
Can volunteers access support or debrief after hard experiences?
Yes. We provide staff guidance and peer spaces for volunteers to reflect and receive support.
Can I volunteer if I have lived experience as a refugee?
Yes. Your lived experience is valuable. We welcome refugee claimants and newcomers as volunteers and peer leaders.
What’s the difference between a volunteer and an intern?
Volunteers usually support community or event-based needs. Interns have formal placements through a school or training program and take on deeper project roles.
Do volunteers help with sponsorship applications?
No. Sponsorship cases are managed by trained staff and designated Circle members. Volunteers may support newcomers once they arrive.
Do you pay volunteers or interns?
No. All volunteer and intern roles are unpaid, though we offer supervision, mentorship, and learning opportunities.
Can I suggest a new volunteer idea or project?
New project ideas are welcome, but due to limited capacity and funding, we prioritize efforts that directly support LGBTQIA+ or HIV+ refugees and align with our mission. Projects must address existing gaps in our work and be approved based on organizational needs. Projects must also reflect the reality that we cannot fund new initiatives.
What is expected of volunteers after training?
All volunteers are expected to participate in at least one event before training, and after training, commit to volunteering for three consecutive months.
Can Rainbow Refugee end my volunteer or intern placement?
Yes. Rainbow Refugee reserves the right to end a volunteer or intern relationship at any time if expectations or values are not met.
Why can’t I see volunteer positions in my Impact app or on the Better Impact website?
If you don’t see available shifts or roles, here are a few possible reasons:
Your account is not fully activated – Ensure your profile is complete and that all required onboarding steps are finished.
You haven’t been assigned to a volunteer role – Some positions are only visible to volunteers assigned to specific roles.
The position is not currently open – Certain roles, especially event-based ones, only appear when new shifts are posted.
Filters may be limiting your view – Check your search filters (date, location, category) to ensure they are not hiding opportunities.
Technical issues – Try logging out and back in, refreshing the page, or updating the app.
Why are there so few volunteer positions available?
Due to the nature of our work, we carefully assess each position to ensure volunteers are properly trained and supported. This approach allows us to maintain a safe, ethical, and meaningful experience for both volunteers and the communities we serve. While opportunities may be limited, we encourage you to stay engaged, as new roles open regularly.
How can I start volunteering?
Once your profile is active, you can sign up for special events, which fall under the Volunteer A category and do not require an interview or training. Simply log into the MyImpact app or MyImpactPage to check for available shifts. Please note that special event opportunities may not always be available. We also share updates about special events and other roles in our monthly volunteer newsletter.
How can I apply for Volunteer B or C categories?
Volunteer B and C categories require an application and interview due to their direct engagement with our members. These roles are announced in our monthly newsletter, where you’ll find application details. Interviews take place via Zoom.
Common Volunteer B & C Roles:
LGBTQIA+ Refugee Sponsor (In-person or Remote)
Rainbow Fairy (Tuesdays, In-person)
Greeter Volunteer (Wednesdays, In-person)
Social Café Co-Facilitator (Wednesdays, In-person)
Triage Volunteer (In-person or Remote)
If you don’t see these positions listed in your profile, you may need to apply first or wait for your profile to be activated.
What if I want to start a new project?
We appreciate the passion and commitment of our volunteers. However, our capacity to launch new projects is limited. Volunteer-led initiatives must align with our mission of supporting LGBTQIA+ and/or HIV+ refugees, address current organizational needs, and be possible with existing resources. Group projects are not always necessary unless the date and format are flexible.
Why should I refer people to Rainbow Refugee if your support is limited?
Even though our capacity is limited, Rainbow Refugee offers unique, affirming support rooted in lived experience and community. We provide trauma-informed peer support, advocacy, and system navigation that many LGBTQIA+ refugee claimants find empowering. We host free orientation workshops every Tuesday from 1:00–3:00 PM at 620 Davie St (Room 1033, Vancouver Public Library) for those navigating the refugee process, and offer peer-led drop-in support on Wednesdays from 1:00–3:00 PM at the Rainbow Refugee office through our Open House.
Our services don’t replace settlement support — they complement it. Community is powerful, and hearing from people with lived experience of forced displacement can help others feel seen, supported, and inspired to continue their journey.
We encourage community partners to stay involved — even if our direct support is limited, we may still be able to provide guidance or referrals. We value collaboration and are committed to working together to support LGBTQIA+ refugee claimants in BC.
What kind of organizations do you partner with?
We primarily partner with settlement organizations, legal clinics, and community-based groups that are LGBTQIA+ affirming and aligned with our mission.
Can we refer LGBTQI+ refugee claimants to you?
Yes, if they are living in British Columbia and identify as LGBTQIA+ and/or HIV+. However, our support is limited, and we often refer people back to LGBTQIA+ affirming settlement agencies for ongoing services.
What kind of support does Rainbow Refugee offer to referred claimants?
We offer peer support, orientation, and access to limited resources. We do not provide emergency housing or case management.
Do you have a list of LGBTQIA+ friendly services in BC?
Yes. We maintain and share a list of affirming healthcare providers, legal clinics, housing supports, and mental health services.
Can we refer someone to Rainbow Refugee for emergency housing?
No. We do not provide housing. We suggest contacting LGBTQIA+ friendly housing programs or general settlement agencies in BC.
Do you provide food or food bank referrals?
Yes. We can refer LGBTQIA+ refugee claimants in BC to local food banks and community kitchens, often in partnership with settlement agencies.
Do you provide settlement support?
No. We are not a settlement agency. Rainbow Refugee is a resource navigation organization and refers individuals to qualified LGBTQIA+ affirming settlement services.
Can we talk to your members about our services?
Maybe. It depends on the type of support you're offering, the event format, timing, and staff capacity. We encourage you to reach out and connect with us in advance. We are open to ongoing collaboration and may be able to help amplify your services if they align with our values and priorities.
What is the best way to collaborate with Rainbow Refugee?
By becoming a community partner or by joining the From Borders to Belonging Coalition in BC to advocate for LGBTQIA+ refugee rights.
Do you accept partnership requests from small or grassroots organizations?
Yes. We value partnerships with grassroots and local organizations that are embedded in LGBTQIA+ and newcomer communities.
Can my organization co-facilitate workshops with Rainbow Refugee?
Possibly. If your work aligns with our goals and we have capacity, we welcome co-hosted community education sessions.
Do you train front-line workers at settlement agencies?
Yes. We offer occasional training on supporting LGBTQIA+ refugee claimants. You can request a session via our website.
How do we stay updated on Rainbow Refugee’s community partnerships and resources?
You can follow our website and social media channels for updates. We also connect with partner orgs through our Coalition listserv.
Can we join the From Borders to Belonging Coalition in BC?
Yes, if your organization is committed to supporting LGBTQIA+ refugee claimants and shares our values of solidarity and anti-oppression.
What does Rainbow Refugee expect from partner organizations?
Clarity, collaboration, and care for the people we serve. We expect alignment with our mission and active engagement in support efforts.
Do you provide public materials that partners can share?
Yes. We offer brochures, posters, and digital toolkits. You’re welcome to share these with proper attribution.
Can Rainbow Refugee help us develop a support program for LGBTQIA+ refugees?
We can share guidance and tools, but ongoing mentorship is limited by staff capacity.
Do you refer to non-LGBTQIA+ specific services?
Only when necessary and with caution. We prioritize affirming services and seek feedback to ensure safe referrals.
How are referrals handled at Rainbow Refugee?
All referrals are based on need, consent, and the availability of services. We do not make automatic referrals without discussion.
Do you support service providers in rural BC?
Yes. We provide online training and resources tailored to the realities of rural and remote support work.
Can we request a presentation from Rainbow Refugee?
Yes, depending on our capacity and your event's alignment with our mission. Fill out our “Book a Speaker” form online.
Do you have any intake forms we can share with clients?
Yes. We have simple, trauma-informed forms and guides that partners are welcome to share with LGBTQIA+ refugee claimants.
Do you support undocumented LGBTQIA+ people referred by settlement organizations?
Yes, especially if they are in BC and exploring the refugee claim process.
How does Rainbow Refugee coordinate with other orgs?
We engage in ongoing communication and mutual referrals, and collaborate on events and advocacy where possible.
What are your limitations as a support organization?
We are not a shelter, legal clinic, or resettlement agency. Our strength lies in peer support, system navigation, and community building.
Can our org send multiple referrals at once?
Yes, but we encourage contacting us first to ensure we have the capacity to respond.
How do I know if a referral to Rainbow Refugee is appropriate?
Use our website to learn about who we support and refer LGBTQIA+ refugee claimants who live in BC and may benefit from peer support.
Can we distribute your materials at our community center?
Yes. Contact us for the most up-to-date materials and guidelines for public sharing.
